For Many, AI Adoption Is Outpacing Security Response Capabilities

Artificial intelligence has moved from experimentation to everyday business infrastructure at remarkable speed. Across industries, organizations are using AI to write code, automate workflows, analyze customer behavior, screen transactions, summarize documents, optimize routes, support customer service, and improve decision-making. For many business leaders, the urgency is clear: adopt AI quickly or risk falling behind.

But from a security standpoint, there is a growing problem.

AI adoption is moving faster than many organizations’ ability to govern, monitor, verify, and respond to the risks it creates.

That gap matters. AI is not only changing how businesses operate. It is changing how threats develop, how quickly incidents escalate, and how difficult it can be to distinguish legitimate activity from suspicious behavior. The same technology that helps organizations move faster can also help bad actors move faster, scale attacks, impersonate trusted people, exploit vulnerabilities, and test defenses with a level of speed and sophistication that many traditional response models were never built to handle.

Recent reporting and research point to a consistent theme: the issue is no longer whether organizations will adopt AI. The issue is whether their security, governance, and response capabilities can keep pace.

The AI adoption curve is moving faster than the control environment

Enterprise AI use is accelerating across functions and industries. Reuters recently reported that Accenture is rolling out Microsoft Copilot to roughly 743,000 employees, one of the largest enterprise deployments of Microsoft’s AI assistant to date. The move is just one among many that reflects how quickly AI tools are becoming embedded in routine business operations, from knowledge work to software development to internal productivity workflows.

At the same time, reports show that many organizations are still building the governance structures needed to manage that adoption safely. McKinsey’s 2026 research on AI trust found that security and risk concerns are the top barrier to scaling agentic AI, with nearly two-thirds of respondents citing those concerns. The same research found that 72 percent of respondents consider cybersecurity a highly relevant AI risk.

That gap is also visible in broader AI safety trends. Stanford’s 2026 AI Index reported that documented AI incidents rose to 362 in 2025, up from 233 in 2024, while responsible AI benchmarking and transparency practices remain inconsistent across leading model developers.

For business leaders, this creates a difficult balance. AI can improve productivity, insight, and efficiency. But when adoption moves ahead of oversight, organizations can unintentionally create new vulnerabilities. Employees may use unsanctioned AI tools. Sensitive information may be entered into platforms without proper review. AI-generated outputs may be trusted without verification. Third-party vendors may introduce AI-enabled systems that are difficult to audit. And security teams may be asked to manage risks they did not help design into the environment.

This is where AI risk becomes an operational issue, not just a technology issue.

Threat actors are using AI to move faster, too

The security concern is not just that organizations are adopting AI quickly, it’s that criminals, fraud networks, cyber attackers, and other bad actors are adopting it as well.

In April 2026, Reuters reported that financial regulators in Australia warned banks that frontier AI could create larger and faster cyberattacks. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority cautioned that many institutions were not prepared for the speed and scale of AI-driven threats, including the potential for advanced systems to identify and exploit vulnerabilities more efficiently.

Similar concerns have surfaced across global financial markets. Japan launched a financial cybersecurity task force amid fears that advanced AI tools could uncover software vulnerabilities faster than organizations can patch them. Reuters reported that regulators and financial institutions were responding to concerns about AI systems capable of identifying critical weaknesses across complex digital environments.

The Washington Post also reported on heightened concern in the cybersecurity community around powerful AI systems capable of advanced code analysis and vulnerability discovery. While these tools can support defensive cybersecurity, experts have warned that similar capabilities could also be misused to automate attacks, accelerate ransomware campaigns, or identify weaknesses at scale.

The common thread is speed.

Traditional security programs often assume a certain amount of time between detection, analysis, decision-making, and response. AI compresses that timeline. Phishing campaigns can be personalized faster. Vulnerabilities can be scanned more broadly. Social engineering attempts can be customized to specific employees, executives, vendors, or customers. Fraud attempts can appear more legitimate. Attacks that once required technical expertise may become easier to execute.

This does not mean every organization is facing a science-fiction threat. It means the gap between attack capability and response capability is narrowing in the wrong direction.

Deepfakes and impersonation are changing trust-based security

One of the clearest examples of AI outpacing response capabilities is the rise of deepfake-enabled fraud and impersonation.

In 2025, the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union urged companies to use stronger tools to detect and counter deepfake content, citing risks that include election interference and financial fraud.

The concern is not limited to public misinformation. Deepfakes and AI-generated voice cloning are increasingly relevant to business security because so many organizational processes still rely on trust signals that can now be manipulated. A voice that sounds like an executive. A video call that appears to include a known colleague. An email written in the style of a vendor. A job applicant who appears legitimate on a remote interview. A carrier, contractor, or service provider using convincing documentation.

In a Wall Street Journal story on the rise of AI-driven CEO impersonator scams, reporter Angus Loten details how attackers use deepfake tactics to target employees with privileged access to company operations.

For industries like logistics, commercial real estate, construction, retail, automotive, utilities, and critical infrastructure, this matters because security depends on more than physical barriers. It depends on verification. Who is allowed on site? Who has access to a yard, building, lot, dock, gate, restricted area, or system? Who authorized a pickup, delivery, work order, maintenance visit, or after-hours entry?

When AI makes impersonation easier, organizations need stronger ways to verify activity in real time.

The physical world is also part of the AI security conversation

AI security is often discussed as a cyber issue. That framing is too narrow.

The risks created by AI increasingly cross into the physical world. A fraudulent credential can lead to unauthorized access. A spoofed vendor request can result in cargo being released to the wrong party. A convincing message can send an employee to open a gate, disable a process, or overlook suspicious activity. A coordinated theft group can use AI tools to research locations, identify patterns, and time activity around known vulnerabilities.

Cargo theft offers a useful example. Organized crime continues to reshape cargo theft through impersonation-based fraud, with criminal networks posing as legitimate carriers and logistics brokers.

That trend does not require AI to be serious. But AI can make impersonation easier, faster, and more scalable. It can help create more convincing communications, fake business profiles, forged-looking documentation, and targeted outreach. It can help bad actors test language, mimic professional tone, or research specific companies and routes.

The same principle applies across verticals.

At a construction site, unauthorized access may begin with a physical fence breach, but planning can be digital. At an auto dealership, theft may happen on the lot, but reconnaissance may happen online. At a multifamily property, trespassing or package theft may be physical, but access attempts may involve social engineering. At a commercial property, a fraudulent maintenance request may create an opening for unauthorized entry. At a utility site, the consequences of delayed detection can extend beyond property loss to safety, service continuity, and community impact.

AI changes the front end of the threat. Security response has to change with it.

Response capability is the real weak point

Many organizations have invested in more cameras, more systems, more data, and more alerts. But more visibility does not automatically mean better security.

The challenge is response capability.

Can suspicious activity be detected quickly? Can the threat be verified? Can the right person take action? Can an audible warning be issued before damage occurs? Can law enforcement or onsite personnel be contacted with useful information? Can the incident be documented clearly? Can the organization distinguish a real threat from normal activity?

As AI accelerates threats, slow or fragmented response models become a liability.

This is especially true for organizations that still rely heavily on passive surveillance. Recording footage may help after an incident, but it does not stop a theft in progress, prevent a break-in, deter trespassing, or verify suspicious activity as it unfolds. In an AI-enabled threat environment, the difference between documentation and intervention becomes more important.

Security teams need systems designed around real-time awareness and action.

Human expertise remains essential

AI can improve detection, analysis, and operational efficiency. But security decisions still require context.

A camera analytics system may detect movement. An AI tool may flag an anomaly. A dashboard may generate an alert. But someone still needs to understand whether the activity is actually suspicious, whether it fits the site’s normal patterns, what response is appropriate, and how to escalate the situation.

That is why human-in-the-loop security remains critical.

The answer to AI-driven risk is not removing people from the process. The answer is giving trained professionals better tools, better visibility, and faster ways to act. AI can help filter noise, identify patterns, and prioritize alerts. Human operators provide judgment, accountability, and situational understanding.

This is especially important in physical security environments, where the wrong response can create unnecessary disruption and the delayed response can allow a preventable incident to escalate.

What organizations should prioritize now

As AI adoption continues to expand, security leaders across industries should focus on closing the gap between adoption and response. That starts with a few practical priorities.

First, organizations need visibility into how AI is being used. Shadow AI creates risk because security teams cannot protect what they cannot see. IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach research found that one in five studied organizations experienced breaches linked to shadow AI, and those incidents added as much as $670,000 to the average breach cost.

Second, businesses need stronger verification processes. AI makes impersonation easier, so access decisions should not rely on familiar names, familiar voices, or convincing messages alone. This is especially important for vendors, contractors, deliveries, carriers, after-hours activity, and remote approvals.

Third, security programs should be designed for real-time response. Cameras, sensors, alarms, access control, AI analytics, and monitoring teams should work together so suspicious activity can be detected, assessed, and addressed before it turns into a loss.

Fourth, organizations should evaluate third-party risk. AI tools are increasingly embedded into vendor platforms, operational systems, and service provider workflows. Leaders should understand where AI is being used, what data it touches, how outputs are validated, and what happens when something goes wrong.

Finally, companies should treat physical security and cybersecurity as connected disciplines. The most effective response strategies will be built around shared visibility, clear escalation paths, and coordinated action across teams.

The security strategy has to catch up

AI adoption will continue to accelerate. Organizations will use it to improve productivity, reduce manual work, analyze information, and compete more effectively. That momentum is not slowing down.

But adoption without response readiness creates exposure.

The organizations best positioned for the next phase of AI will be the ones that understand the security implications early. They will look beyond software policies and ask harder operational questions. How do we verify what is real? How do we detect suspicious activity faster? How do we respond before an incident escalates? How do we protect people, property, assets, and operations in an environment where threats can move faster than before?

For security leaders, the lesson is clear.

AI is changing the pace of risk. Security strategies need to match that pace with real-time detection, human expertise, verified response, and proactive intervention.

In a world where threats can be researched, personalized, automated, and scaled faster than ever, waiting for an incident to unfold is no longer a viable strategy. Organizations need security systems built to recognize risk as it happens and respond while there is still time to prevent loss.
